Cardinal Light Red Hydrangea is a compact deciduous shrub that blooms on old wood.  Its serrated dark green leaves turn purple in fall.  The color of the large panicles of mophead flowers depends on the soil PH - The signature rich cardinal red is in alkaline soils, while acidic soils produce deep mauve flowers.  It takes an extended time for the colors to develop in the flowers, which open green, and come into full color when most other flowers are fading.  The flowers attract pollinators. Best bloom in partial sun and rich, moist well-drained soils.
