Garnet Japanese Maple is a fast-growing deciduous shrub with an upright mounding habit and pendulous branching sporting deeply dissected palmate foliage that emerges bright orange-red and turns garnet in fall. Small, non-showy but attractive umbels of purple flowers bloom in spring followed by samaras. Grows best in rich, moist, slightly acidic well-drained soils. Prefers full sun in cooler climates, but needs afternoon shade in southern areas. Garnet's summer color can be more faded in southern summer heats.
