Sourwood, Sorrel Tree
Oxydendrum arboreum
Sourwood is a native understory deciduous tree with a straight slender trunk and a narrow oblong crown. The glossy green leaves are finely teethed and turn a brilliant scarlet to burgundy in fall. Drooping one-sided panicles with lightly fragrant waxy white flowers bloom in early summer that give way to silver seed capsules. Best flowering and color in full sun with moist, rich well-drained acidic soils.
