Japanese Cleyera is a broadleaf evergreenĀ shrubĀ with a dense, low branching rounded habitĀ when young and become more tree-like as it matures.Ā The new growth emerges bronze and matures to leathery lustrousĀ dark green leaves with a paler underside.Ā Its fragrant, downward-facing clusters of creamy white flowers bloom in late spring followed by shiny black fruit.Ā Ā PrefersĀ part sunĀ and moist, well-drained soil.Ā Good drought tolerance once established and can tolerate near full shade.Ā Can be kept in a container or pruned to maintain youthful habit.
