American Hybrid Chestnut is a blight-resistant hybrid of the native deciduous tree with denser branching and bark that becomes furrowed with it age. The long glossy toothed leaves identical to the American Chestnut and turn yellow-bronze to golden-brown in fall. The showy clusters of creamy spring catkins have an unpleasant smell but are well worth the heavy fall crop of sweet husked nuts. Grows best in full sun and loamy, moist well-drained acidic soils. Tolerates both clay soils and drought. Dunstan begins producing nuts as early as 3-5 years of age.
