Twombly's Japanese Maple
Acer palmatum 'Twombly's Red Sentinel'
Twombly's Japanese Maple is a beautiful compact deciduous tree with a dense columnar crown, low branching, and bare stems that become a deep red in winter. Its palmate leaves emerge bright red and darkens to burgundy-green before returning to red with orange hues in fall. Small non-showy umbels of red-purple flowers bloom mid-spring followed by samaras. Grows best in rich, moist, slightly acidic well-drained soils. Prefers full sun in cooler climates, but needs afternoon shade in southern areas.
