20th Century Asian Pear is a fruiting deciduous tree with a showy spring flowering and rounded habit grown for its large summer fruit. The glossy dark green foliage turns fire red in fall. The large yellow to golden round fruits with crisp white flesh similar to an apple and a sweet hint of nuttiness are ready for harvest in late summer into fall. Grows best in full sun and rich, moist well-drained soils. 20th Century is the most popular Asian Pear in the US market, and can be stored for several months after ripening.
Asian pears keep their texture when cooked, and store for long times. Needs a cross-pollinator, and has a low chill requirement of 350-500 hours.

MAINTENANCE NEEDS: High Maintenance. Needs regular watering. Pears are particularly prone to fire blight, especially after wet and warm springs. Other issues include canker, powdery mildew, scab, and anthracnose. Possible pests include pear psylla, coddling moth and borers. Fallen fruit can be messy if not harvested.
