Gold-Edged Winter Daphne is a compact woody evergreen shrub with nicely glossed variegated whorls of dark green leathery foliage edged with creamy gold.  Its dark purple buds open to highly fragrant pale pink flowers in late winter and early spring.  Needs afternoon shade and moist, sharply-drained soils.  Moderately salt tolerant. 

NOTE: Winter Daphne is poisonous and will cause a rash with skin contact! Handle with care.

MAINTENANCE NEEDS:  High Maintenance.  Needs sharply drained soils.  Allow the top inch of soil to dry between watering.  Mulch in winter and protect from winter winds- winter stressed plants are more susceptible to disease.  Cut back after flowering to prevent leggy growth.  Potential diseases include botrytis, leaf spots, canker, twig blight, crown rot, root rot and virus. Potential insect pests include aphids, mealybugs and scale.  Poisonous- handle with gloves and do not plant in area where brushing against is likely.
