Japanese Cleyera is a broadleaf evergreen shrub with a dense, low branching rounded habit when young and become more tree-like as it matures.  The new growth emerges bronze and matures to leathery lustrous dark green leaves with a paler underside.  Its fragrant, downward-facing clusters of creamy white flowers bloom in late spring followed by shiny black fruit.  Prefers part sun and moist, well-drained soil.  Good drought tolerance once established and can tolerate near full shade.  Can be kept in a container or pruned to maintain youthful habit.
