A Living Garden for Easter Sunday

Presented by ServeScape and Chamblee First United Methodist Church

This Easter, Chamblee First United Methodist Church invites parishioners to help create Easter Eden—a living garden that will transform the sanctuary into a beautiful botanical landscape celebrating the resurrection story.

Inspired by the Gospel of John, where Mary Magdalene encounters the risen Christ and mistakes Jesus for the gardener, Easter Eden will recreate the beauty of a flourishing garden through a collection of living plants placed throughout the sanctuary.

Rather than traditional cut flowers, the sanctuary will be decorated with living plants—native pollinator plants, edible plants, and species with biblical connections.

After Easter Sunday service, each plant will return home with the parishioner who sponsored it, allowing the Easter garden to continue growing throughout our community.

A Church Deeply Rooted in Community

Chamblee First United Methodist Church has served the community for nearly two centuries. Originally founded in 1826 as Prospect Methodist Episcopal Church, the congregation has grown and evolved alongside the city of Chamblee, moving to its current campus on Chamblee-Dunwoody Road in 1963.

Today, under the leadership of Rev. Blair Zant, the church continues its mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

As the church approaches its 200-year anniversary in 2026, the theme “Deeply Rooted, Ever Growing” beautifully reflects the spirit behind Easter Eden—celebrating renewal, growth, and faith through the imagery of the garden.

The Garden of the Resurrection

The story of Easter is deeply connected to gardens.

Scripture begins in the Garden of Eden, and the resurrection unfolds in a garden near the empty tomb.

When Mary Magdalene first encounters the risen Christ, she believes Him to be the gardener.

Easter Eden invites us to remember this moment by surrounding our sanctuary with living plants that symbolize life, restoration, and new beginnings.

Preparation for Installation

To help volunteers prepare the sanctuary for the Easter Eden installation, we recommend having the following materials available:

• Plastic sheeting, butcher paper, or protective fabric to place under plants during installation and display
• Materials to protect floors and surfaces from soil and water
• Access to water for light watering if needed after plants are staged.

Because these are living plants, they may require light moisture before Easter Sunday to ensure they remain vibrant for the display. ServeScape recommends placing ice on the soil surface Friday evening to slowly release moisture overnight and help keep plants hydrated and looking their best through Sunday morning.
