Benefits of Growing Your Own Food

Produce shipped from other regions is less nutrient dense due to early harvesting, and aging during transit. Homegrown fruit, when picked at full ripeness, has a higher nutritional value and tastes better. Enjoy growing your own fruit trees and berry bushes and reap the health and taste benefits!

Self-pollinators are identified in our plant descriptions. Self-pollinators yield larger harvests when planted near a cross-pollinator. Cross-pollinators should have the same bloom time and be planted as close as possible (based on mature size) for optimal fruiting.

For larger plant specimens, be sure to plant away from structures to protect foundations. Also, fruit producing plants require full sun, so consider how nearby trees and structures may cast long shadows on newly planted trees and bushes when choosing their placement. If you are short on space, try container gardening with dwarf and easily pruned varieties

Spring is the best time to plant fruit trees. Choose a location that is full sun (6+ hours of direct sunlight each day) and has well-draining soil. Dig a hole that is the depth of the root ball and twice as wide. Place your tree in the center and backfill with soil. Water deeply to saturate the ground and settle soil around the root ball. Cover with a 2-3 inch layer of mulch (not touching the trunk) to retain moisture.
